Korea's LG Electronics unveiled on December 9 the company's first LTE (Long Term Evolution)-based mobile terminal modem chip in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, The Korea Times reported. The chip is believed to support an optimum wireless download speed of 100Mbps and upload speed of 50Mbps. Currently the fastest mobile phone download speed, enabled by HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology, stands at 7.6Mbps. LG's LTE chip has a footprint of 13x13mm, and the company projects the commercial launch of LTE mobile phones in 2010. LG has also been developing a preliminary LTE-based data card for use in PCs. Meanwhile, LG's arch competitor Samsung Electronics is rooting for WiMAX, the rival next-generation telecommunications technology to LTE.
